On the morning of event day, April 17th, sixteen different field day activities were arranged for over 200 fourth and fifth graders from KIPP STRIVE Primary School in Atlanta’s West End. This event was the first ever charitable event held at the brand new Mercedes-Benz Stadium as well as the first event of its kind for the Good Sports/Atlanta Falcons Youth Foundation partnership, now in its 8th year. KIPP STRIVE is a public, tuition free charter school that serves youth in Atlanta’s most at-risk neighborhood.
Before the field day commenced, KIPP students ran through the same tunnel that their favorite professional football players run through on game day and got to see themselves up on the jumbotron. Escorted by Freddie the Falcon and Falcons cheerleaders, the kids immediately erupted in cheers and showed off their best dance moves as soon as they realized they were on the big screen. After opening remarks and words of encouragement from Rich McKay, president and CEO of the Falcons, the students broke out into groups and were sent to their assigned physical activity stations.
The activity stations were run by sixty enthusiastic Atlanta Falcons associates. Over a two-hour period, the kids rotated to stations that ranged from football tosses to tug-o-war. Their energy never wavered throughout the day. After the event concluded, KIPP students left with smiles on their faces as well as $14,000 in brand new physical education equipment for their school.
