When I first joined the Good Sports Boston Young Professionals Board four years ago I had no idea what it would come to mean to me. Our annual Kentucky Derby Party was a fun way to network and raise money for a good cause while wearing some funny clothes. As the YPB has grown and Good Sports has exploded I have been able to experience first hand the active change they create in the community. The Good Sports mission is so powerful yet so simple that it almost lacks notice – give kids a chance to play sports.
Apart from raising money for Good Sports, one of our most important charges as a Young Professionals Board is to grow awareness around the name and mission of Good Sports in the community. Spread the word, create excitement and tell people about all of the good the organization does every day. It’s up to us to highlight local stories, offer ways for others to help and get involved and also keep everyone up to date on events and functions the Board and Good Sports are planning.
I always tell our board members that, while what we do may seem small in comparison to the millions of children helped and millions of dollars raised, if the work the Young Professionals Board does here in Boston leads to just one girl or boy being able to empower themselves mentally, athletically, and socially – then it will have all been worth it.
